Rubber O-ring is one of the most common seals used in machine design because they are inexpensive, easy to make, reliable, and have simple mounting requirements. The ring is made of high performance elastomer with a round cross-section and it can withstand very high pressure of up to a few thousands PSI.
The ring is designed to be installed in a groove and it can be used in either static application, where it is being compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a tight seal at the interface; or in dynamic application where there is relative motion between the parts and the O-ring. Examples of dynamic applications include rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons.
